Environment California raises over $20,000 to rescue LA sea lion pups

Environment California

Calabasas, CA – Environment California has delivered over $20,000 for California Wildlife Center to rescue stranded sea lion pups along the coast. The money will help cover the cost of building temporary sea lion and seal housing at the Center and provide for the care, feeding, and rehabilitation of stranded sea lion pups.

“We’re very proud to do our part rescuing sea lion pups,” said Nathan Weaver with Environment California, “and we’re deeply grateful to our members for each contribution that made this gift possible.” “This achievement shows that Californians can come together to protect our iconic ocean wildlife.”

Sea lion pups have washed up on California’s shores in record numbers over the past few months, most of them sick and starving. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reports nearly 1,300 sea lion pup strandings this year, over 450 in Los Angeles County alone. That’s more than twice the combined number of stranded pups rescued statewide over the past five years, according to NOAA. The crisis has challenged many rescue organizations as they work to keep pace with the sea lions’ desperate need.

“The impact and reach of the support we’ve received from Environment California and others furthers the California Wildlife Center’s mission to take responsibility for and provide direct, lifesaving care to native wildlife,” commented Marcella Bell, Executive Director for the California Wildlife Center.” “With this help, CWC doesn’t just expand its ability to care for the wildlife of California, it eases the burden of the entire Los Angeles marine mammal response community.”
