Individuals and schools urge LA to become a world-class solar city

Environment California

Los Angeles – Environment California today announced the winners of its first-ever “Sunlight. Camera. Action” video contest in which contestants submitted two-minute videos making the case for Los Angeles to become a world-class solar leader.

“The creative talent and commitment of Angelenos to a clean energy future shine bright in the winning videos,” said Michelle Kinman, clean energy advocate for Environment California. “These videos can inspire residents and public officials to make Los Angeles the #1 solar city in America, bringing cleaner air, reduced global warming pollution and local jobs.”

Six finalists were chosen, three from individuals and three from Los Angeles schools.  The winners were chosen through a combination of public online voting—with nearly 2,000 votes cast—and judging from a special Hollywood panel, comprised of Carter Oosterhouse (TV personality), Chris Paine (filmmaker, Who Killed the Electric Car? and Revenge of the Electric Car) and Amy Smart (actress).

The first place video, It’s Time by Alex Loverde, reflects the fact that LA is a city in the sun and that the time is right to go solar in a big way “because Los Angeles is a place of what’s possible.”

Winning second place is the video Go Solar! by Ms. Vargas’ 6th grade class at Micheltorena Elementary School, whose enthusiasm for solar is infectious. Third place and the People’s Choice Award goes to the 1st grade classes from Plasencia Math and Science Magnet Center with their video Let’s Go Solar: The Solution is in the Sky, which reminds us that “there’s so much to gain and nothing to lose” by tapping into the power of the sun.

Environment California is advocating for the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power to increase its local solar capacity to 1,200 megwatts, or approximately 20% of the city’s peak summertime energy needs, by 2020. This goal amounts to LADWP’s share of Governor Brown’s statewide goal for 12,000 megawatts of local clean power to be installed in California by 2020.
