New law bans toxics from toys
After a hard-fought campaign, California has become the first state to ban chemicals called phthalates from children’s products. Phthalates are chemicals added to plastic to make it flexible, but are linked to a myriad of health problems, including early onset of puberty, reproductive problems, liver damage and testicular cancer.
In the weeks leading up to the governor’s decision to sign our Stop Toxic Toys bill (AB 1108), we held several media events with our co-sponsoring organization, Breast Cancer Fund. For one event, we gathered 1,000 toxic-free rubber duckies. Another featured best-selling author and pediatrician Dr. Harvey Karp, and another showcased a 25-foot-tall inflatable duck. We applaud Gov. Schwarzenegger, Senate President Perata, Speaker Núñez, and AB 1108’s author Assemblymember Ma for standing up to powerful interests and protecting our kids.
