Statement: Gov. Newsom’s budget invests in combating the climate crisis

SACRAMENTO — Gov. Gavin Newsom’s 2022-2023 budget, which was announced Monday, includes critical investments to address one of California’s existential threats — the climate crisis. Gov. Newsom’s CA Blueprint builds on last year’s investments, devoting an additional $22.5 billion for combating the climate crisis.
Those funds include

$2 billion for clean energy, including offshore wind and energy storage

$2.1 billion for coastal and ocean protections, parks and smart agriculture

$6.1 billion for zero emission vehicles (ZEVs), including 100,000 charging stations and electric school buses
-
$9 billion for high speed rail and other clean transit initiatives.
With the governor’s proposal completed, the state legislature will now work to develop their budget proposal.
Environment California State Director Laura Deehan issued the following statement:
“California has to lead on climate and clean energy action, and Gov. Newsom’s budget shows he understands we must continue making the environment a top priority for our state.
“His proposed investments in clean air, electric buildings, offshore wind and energy storage would help accelerate our path to get to 100% clean energy. And investing in nature now is critical for protecting our beautiful open spaces and wildlife.”
“However, this budget is only the first step; we look forward to working with the legislature and the Governor’s office to get a budget for a clean economy signed by June 30th, 2022”.
