SACRAMENTO — Gov. Gavin Newsom’s just-announced revised budget prioritizes critical investments to protect our environment. The state has a record $76 billion in surplus revenues, which is allowing the governor to make major investments in key state priorities.

The plan includes $3.2 billion investment in clean cars; including funding for 1,000 clean trucks and 1,000 electric school buses; and $915 million down payment for the charging infrastructure we need to support electric vehicles on the road. California has 67,000 shared charging stations across the state, and the California Energy Commission estimates we need 1.5 million shared charging stations statewide by 2030.

The governor has also proposed over $900 million in clean energy investments, including $350 Million for long-duration storage and $250 million for energy efficiency measures, funding for solar on aquaducts as well as $20 Million for offshore wind.

There is also $54 million for endangered species protection, over $500 million for our state park system and funding for wildlife corridors.

Gov. Newsom’s budget proposal still needs to be approved by the legislature.

Environment California State Director Laura Deehan issued the following statement:

“As we experience a severe drought and the threats of more severe wildfires, it is clear that the time to invest in solutions to planetary warming is now.  Today’s announcement by the Governor is a welcome downpayment to ensure that California accelerates our way to a zero carbon destination.”

“Investments in offshore wind, energy storage and solar on the aqueduct will accelerate our path to get to 100% clean energy. And expanding parks, wildlife corridors and protections for endangered species is critical given the scale of the nature crisis.”

“This is like waking up on Christmas morning. There are a lot of beautifully wrapped gifts. We are still trying to figure out what is in all the boxes, but we know they are going to be filled with good presents for the environment.”
